Me:               Mine.

Me:               Yes, I did.

Customer:     So, what is your real name?

Me:               The one on the cover, of course...Tony Fernandes...why?

Customer:     How come you have a Christian name?

Me:               Because there are Christians in India.

Customer:     Really? How? Why? And where exactly is Goa?

Me:               http://bit.ly/117ynWQ

SO, WHAT IS YOUR REAL NAME?

REAL NAME

I sell my book ‘GOA—Memories of My Homeland’ at Arts & Craft Shows. It’s there, placed on a stand at the point of sale, so visitors to the show can see the publication.

Here are some FAQs:

2. So, you wrote this book?
3. Whose Memories are these?
4. So, what is Goa?
5. So, who is Tony Fernandes?
6. What is your real name?
7. Why do you have a western name?
8. Are there any Christians in India?

So here are some
Brief Notes about Goa

Calm and Serene
Mandrem, North Goa

The magnificent Church of
Our Lady of Immaculate Conception
Panjim - Capital

Known around the world for its serene beauty, GOA is located south of Mumbai, India.

The poems were written by me over the last many years. They are memories of my childhood years as I grew up and studied in Goa during the rule of the erstwhile Portuguese, studied Segundo Grau Portuguese as a second language, served Mass in Latin as an altar boy, and graduated from an English speaking High school, run by the Order of the Franciscans Minor Capuchins. Anthony is my original name and 'real' name. Fondly called Tony - given to me at birth, baptized and confirmed in a church-going Catholic family.

Tony, which is my real name, has never been changed from another name. Many people have Christian names in India for the simple reason that there are so many Christians in various different denominations of Christianity in India - a fact that some people in the west do not know about.

It gained full-fledged statehood on 12th August 1987. Prior to that, it was a Union Territory for 26 years, after four and a half centuries of Portuguese rule. It is 1,022 metres above sea-level with an area of 3700 sq.km.

Its capital is Panaji.  Goa comprises of districts like Ilhas, Bardez, Salcette, Ponda, Marmagoa, Bicholim, Satari, Pernem, Quepem, Sanguem, and Canacona. Its captital is Panaji. Its other major cities are  Margao,  Mapsa and Vasco da Gama and Marmagoa which has a natural
harbour.

Statue of Abade Faria, Master of Hypnotism
Panjim

Goa’s  main rivers are the Zuari, Mandovi and Chapora. It has beautiful palm-fringed and scenic beaches like Colva, Candolim , Calangute, Vagator and Arambol with golden sands all along its western coast line. Spanning across the eastern part of Goa is the magnificent mountain range called the Western Ghats. Nestled among those hills are the famous 3-tier water-falls called Dudsagar.

Tiracol River, North Goa

With a total population of approximately 1.2 million, it is bustling with activity. It is a world famous tourist destination with excellent air, sea, rail and interstate bus connections. Besides having the first lighthouse in Asia, and the first printing press in India (1556) established by the Jesuits, it has numerous archaeological sites like ancient forts for the connoisseur to study and explore besides ancient temples and churches.

Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa.

Goa is famous for its architectural grandeur – its ancient churches, temples and mosques. Goans are a peace-loving people with a strong sense of community, taking pride in their own distinct culture and heritage.

In a modern cosmopolitan world, Goa has managed to preserve its old world charm.

CONFUSED BUYER
Real-life experiences at Arts & Crafts Shows

This guy comes straight in. He has a typical unmistakable air about him. He thinks he knows everything, he pretends. Reads the sign out loud. “EDNA’S PICKLES”. “Who’s Edna?” he barks in a demanding tone. Looks minutely at all products. Backs off a little. Steps forward again. Checks one more time. Tastes. Smacks audibly. Backs off yet again. Disappears. Comes again and promises to buy at the next show.

PRETENCE DEVELOPED INTO A FORM OF FINE ART!

This guy walks slowly hugging any one side of an aisle, and while he does that he looks away from the row of booths on that side while maintaining his constant gaze towards your side – that way he completely gets away in ignoring both sides of the aisle – one by looking away yet remaining close to it and the other by keeping the distance. Clever bloke!

Hasta Mañana at Khan Creek, Sharjah, UAE

HASTA  MANANA

Where is the spring and the summer
that once was yours and mine?
Where did it go?
I just don't know.

AL KHAN CREEK - Sharjah, 1974 - United Arab Emirates
Water colour painting by Tony Fernandes
Size 20" x 16 "

Warm summer evening, humidity is in the air. As usual on such days, our friends meet us the creek there. Swimming or just relaxing on the beach, watching the sunset. Talking, catching up on things. We carried our portable radio with us and tuned in to Dubai FM. 'Hasta Manana' turned out to be yet another hit for 'ABBA' among other songs of that era that got a lot of air time.

The late evening scene, just like my water colour painting above, was warm, still, serene. Beautiful and sleepy little ancient village of Al Khan at sunset. Then in the twilight, towards the east glowed dimly the lights of Sharjah town, and in the distance, west by south-west, glimmered the lights of Dubai, and their hopes and dreams of becoming modern and beautiful cities.

Click on the link below to give a listen, just for old times’ sake,
to that wonderful old classic of 40 years ago.

......Hasta Manana 'til we meet again,
my good old friends.
Don't know where, don't know when.....

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

MOTHER OF MINE

Dubai 1972 – Airwaves around the world are abuzz with Jimmy Osmond’s ‘Mother of Mine’ and the UAE is no exception. The song turns out to be a huge hit for Jimmy, the youngest of nine children in the Osmond clan, who at the time was only nine years old. I thought about my Mum in Goa every time I heard it, and constantly hummed the tune or sang the lyrics under my breath. Two years later I lost my mother. She was my best friend who I miss up to this day. She taught me all that I know and set an example living her own simple life and made my own worth living. Not a single day goes by without thoughts of her good values. She died young. I have outlived her so far by five years.

Forty-three years after the song ‘Mother of Mine’ first captured the air-waves, I rededicate my favourite song to mothers everywhere. Hope it’s your favourite too.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS

TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS

The afternoon has now slowly turning into evening.  A great and joyous picnic has just ended. The sun will shortly go down over the Hajjar mountain range. John Denver’s vibrant voice in ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ is playing on my Mazda station wagon’s cassette tape-recorder. A huge hit for John Denver, singing ‘Country Road’ was not missed out any party, dance, picnic or get-together. Heading north by north-west from Fujeirah towards Sharjah, it will be a long drive ahead and our mini-convoy of cars will shortly disappear into the sunset over Masafi, as we hope to safely make it home, before eight o’clock - lest we forget, it is still Friday – as we simply cannot afford to miss out on one of the greatest and longest series of the time that delighted us all, and that’s none other ‘Dallas’ and the conniving ways of JR!
Circa 1980.

MALAIKA - Life in the Emirates

When everyone sang 'Malaika'

'Dubai Creek 1970'
Oil painting by Tony Fernandes
Size 3ft x 2ft

Dubai - United Arab Emirates

MALAIKA

Grand New Year’s Eve Ball, Intercon Dubai. Circa 1976. After a short break, the dance band on stage strikes up a few distinct initial bars of a familiar song. It is quite evident what the song choice has been. It is a slow piece. Couples rise and gently walk to the floor and begin dancing as the lights dim. The band’s crooner sings the song – none other than the famous Kenyan singer/composer Fadhili William’s  famous Swahili song ‘Malaika’ popularized by Miriam Makeba, Harry Belafonte, Boney M and Sal Davis. The couples on the dance floor appear to lip-sync “Malaika, nakupenda Malaika…Nashindwa na mali sina we…”.

Everybody seemed to know the lyrics even if they did not speak Swahili! Wow! All I knew was the meaning of the song 'Malaika' which means 'Angel'. I remember watching an English version sung by Sal Davis from Kenya on Dubai TV. He also sang "Back in Dubai' when he visited Dubai.

No dance gala was ever complete then, nor is complete even now without ‘Malaika’ at any Goan function held across the world. A great song indeed and a beautiful catchy tune.

Please click on the link below to listen to a beautiful rendition in a duet arrangement by Harry Belafonte and Miriam Makeba. Malaika is a Swahili song written by Tanzanian musician Adam Salim in 1945. This song is possibly the most famous of all Swahili love songs in Tanzania, Kenya and the entire East Africa, as well as being one of the most widely known of all Swahili songs in the world.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND!

DUBAI CREEK
1967
Line Artwork Drawing
by Tony Fernandes

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

Before the days of FM Radio Transmission in the UAE, the pionering expatriate folks who worked and lived there relied on western music reception from the ARAMCO oilfields base in Saudi Arabia. The definitive 3 FM radio stations were Light Music on 100, Classical on 96 and Popular on 88 MHz. The only other radio program that broadcast on FM radio was station in Sharjah which began in the early 1970's after the British Royal Air Force Base closed down its programs of western music on Medium Wave radio.

One of my favourite hit songs of that era was 'Those were the days' sung by Welsh singer Mary Hopkin which was aired on a regular basis by these radio stations of another era. As I reminisce today those were the days indeed. Please click on the link below to listen to a fabulous song of those days. Those days, which were the days then, are the days even now!
